How to Survive the Candida Cleanse Diet Plan.
Why did I go on this eating plan, otherwise known as the near-zero sugars plan? Well, that’s easy. I was really uncomfortable. Whenever I ate, my stomach would make these crazy noises. Other people could hear it which was embarrassing.
I felt like I had to yawn all the time due to the pressure pushing up on my diaphragm and not getting enough air in. I was bloated and gaining weight for no obvious reasons.
When I went to my doctor with these complaints, she suggested I take her candida symptom questionnaire. I took it and scored close to 300. If I recall a positive was anything over 120. Her questionnaire can’t be shared here but there are some shorter ones online like, this one. from the candidadiet.com site or this more comprehensive one from the yeastconnection.com.
She prescribed a candida cleanse using the candida diet and some key supplements for 6 weeks. Then I am to return to see how it’s going and how to start slowly back into my normal eating habits. She also told me that it was going to be really hard.
The candida die off symptoms could include feeling some of the following at first:
- Stomach Issues like bloating
- Aches and Pains
- Feeling Feverish
I am currently in week 4 of the plan and I am already feeling some amazing changes.
Once I got over the candida die off symptoms, things quickly improved!
- Migraines-Down from once per week to one in three weeks. That one migraine was on a day when the weather barometric pressure change was about 20 degrees in a matter of a few hours. Several people I know had migraines that day.
- Weight- I lost 4 pounds in 3 weeks. This is not huge but to see the scale budge at all for me felt like a big deal to me.
- Blood sugar swings-My blood sugar swings seem to be less severe. I was feeling light headed, dizzy, shaky and got headaches midmorning and mid-afternoon almost daily and now I have very little to none of these symptoms!
- Energy-I have tons more energy than I had a few weeks ago-it is unbelievable.
- Brain-I am thinking more clearly and have better, more sustained focus.
- Scores-The candida symptom score went down 70 points!
How to Survive the Candida Diet Plan: The Cravings will be Strong.
My doctor warned me that around week 2 the bugs would start speaking to me and I may have some candida die off symptoms too.
Let me tell you she was right! I was so close to going for a fruit binge. Fruit doesn’t sound so bad but when you have an overgrowth of something like candida, feeding it with sugar (even the healthy fruit type) would not help me win this battle.
I want it on it’s knees, injured and weak and then I would come in with a surprise attack of anti-fungal supplements and essential oils.
So here’s what happened. I woke up at around 2:00 am one night, half asleep, I walked down to the kitchen and ate a banana. At 2:00 am! When I woke up I thought I had dreamed it. Until I saw the peel in the trash.
The Bugs Talk to You.
Yep, she was right the bugs were talking to my subconscious sleeping brain. I didn’t give up though. I took some of the supplement that kills candida first thing and continued on the plan.
Speaking of supplements, below is a list of them that are really helping me. Different doctors and practitioners may recommend different supplements that act in a similar fashion.
In addition, doctors vary somewhat on what they believe should be allowed while on the candida diet plan. Some say fermented foods are good due to the beneficial bacteria and others say steer clear of these during the candida cleanse.
The same goes with sweeteners. My doctor does not want me to have any sugar alcohols others allow things like xylitol. So you will have to work with your doctor on your own personal plan.
Please always check with your doctor before taking anything new. Supplements and herbs can be very potent.

How to Survive the Candida Diet Plan:
You may be wondering what I am eating if I can’t have sugar, flour, dairy, or gluten.
How did I survive the candida diet plan? The basic idea of the candida cleanse was to cut sugar out of the diet. That means not only no sugary sweets like cake and cookies, but also no sugar alcohols, no honey, syrup, or high sugar fruits. In fact, the only fruits I’ve eaten are grapefruit, lemon, and avocado.
In addition, there is no gluten and no dairy allowed. That is a lot of no’s!
One thing to be certain, you do not want to get caught hungry when you’re doing the candida cleanse. That would not work out so well for you. The cravings at first are strong. The good news is that they do diminish eventually and the candida die off symptoms disappear as well.
Below is a simple How-To List:
- Be prepared from day one.
- Go shopping and pick up many of the items on the allowed list.
- Cook a huge pot of soup on Sunday (soup was my lunch and dinner some days)
- Boil eggs and take them to work.
- Make nut butter balls for a quick snack.
- Bake almond flour and coconut flour bread.
- You can use this nut flour blend to make a bunch of pancakes and freeze in single servings.
- I was and am addicted to dark chocolate so I got some 90% which is very low in sugar and am eating that instead of the 80% I ate before.
- Get used to eating different types of vegetables and make lots of varying salads.
- Stir fry vegetables with small amounts of organic chicken or beef.
- Eat real organic butter on vegetables and paleo breads.
- Make your own sweet potato crisps using coconut oil and thinly sliced sweet potatoes with sea salt.
- Avoid eating out as much as possible but if there was no way around it, choose plain meats and veggies.
How to Survive the Candida Diet Plan: It’s Totally Worth It!
So far, I am not nearly as hungry as I thought I would be and I am starting to see some amazing results like the things I mentioned above! It is so worth it and I will complete the 6 weeks and maybe 8 because I feel like I am winning a battle.
After Lyme, I am grateful for every day that I feel well. The amazing thing is that I have felt well after this candida cleanse, for not just a day at a time but for at least 2 weeks now!
So, the bottom line as with many diet plans is:
Individualize it to work for you.
Work with a qualified practitioner. This is especially important for help with candida die off symptoms.
Go for eating mostly whole foods and load up on the vegetables.
Eat organic as much as possible.
Buy quality, doctor recommended supplements and vitamins.
How to Survive the Candida Diet Plan: But The Weight Loss wasn’t huge.
If I really want to lose more weight around my middle, I am thinking I will need to decrease the total carbohydrate I consume in a day.
I believe that in order to be successful with any eating plan, one has to take it slow and be sure not feel too hungry or deprived. My sister-in-law’s site LowCarbYum has a ton of great recipes that I adapt as needed so I can still eat delicious meals.
We use coconut, almond, or hemp milk in place of cow’s milk at home anyway. I sweeten with either stevia and monk fruit in place of sugar alcohols right now as well. Cooking with a variety of spices helps keep meals less bland. Since I am also sensitive to night shades my spice usage is a little limited. If this is you check out this post on 7 nightshade free spices for ideas.
So, do I think I can starve candida and never have another overgrowth? No, that’s probably unlikely given the virulent nature of candida and my history of antibiotic usage. But for me right now this is a numbers game. I need to knock them down enough for me to feel well. Then my own more balanced gut flora can have a fair chance. That, my friends, is how to survive the candida diet plan while minimizing candida die off symptoms. I hope these tips were helpful!
