This easy apple slice recipe is also a great idea when you want a quick breakfast for kids. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I love breakfast foods of all kinds: eggs, pancakes, waffles, smoothies, parfaits, etc. (all gluten free and dairy free of course!). One of the most common adages you hear is “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” However, despite this, people still skip breakfast.
Apple Slice Recipe (Apple Cinnamon Frittata)
The Importance of Breakfast
Key Components of a Good Breakfast (Apple Slice Recipe)
One of the key nutrients your body needs to provide you energy and keep you full is protein. Eating high protein meals causes the body to release a hunger hormone, ghrelin, that increases your feelings of satiety. Protein plays an important role in repairing muscles.
The protein source in this apple slice recipe for a cinnamon frittata is egg whites, which are low in calories but have a high protein content. Eggs always make a great breakfast for kids.
Healthy Fat in our Apple Slice Recipe
Including healthy fats in your breakfast also helps keep you full longer. One of my favorite sources that is used in this recipe is coconut oil. Coconut oil is rich in medium-chain fatty acids which help your body digest and are not readily stored in the body as fat in small quantities.
The medium-chain fatty acids are absorbed by cells almost immediately providing long-lasting energy. They also improve brain and memory function that will help you throughout the day.
Fiber should always be part of a good breakfast for kids
High-fiber foods are filling and help keep you satisfied longer. They are energy dense, having fewer calories for the same volume of food. Fiber also is key in controlling blood sugar levels.
The apples used in this recipe provides fiber. They also help to bring the dish some tartness and sweetness.
- Thinly slice the apple
- Coat the pan with coconut oil
- Turn the heat on and place the apple slices on the pan
- While the apples are cooking, combine the egg whites, cashew milk, cinnamon, and vanilla
- Pour the mixture over the apples and let cook for 1 minute
- Flip and cook the other side for 1 minute
- Enjoy! (:
